Battletech Update

No, I’m not dead.

Things have been busy around here. I haven’t had any time to post. Here is one of the irons I have in the fire.

I painted my mercenary Battalion, the Second Battalion of Kirstin’s Krushers. I have talked about it before. Here is a summary:

1. Superglue a Battlemech to a base, then fill in the gaps with this stuff, Texture Gel. It’s basically white glue with lava bits in it. I slathered it on, intending for it to provide a realistic look to the base, but it shrank in some cases, leaving a dip in the texture gel. :( I suppose the bad news is you can’t get it anymore. What I have is all that I’m going to get.

2. Hosed the Battlemech down in the Army Painter system, a spray paint with primer and color in one can, so you don’t fill in the details with several coats.

3. Dip the Battlemech in a lacquer to make the details really “pop” out. That worked, but not quite the way I wanted it to.

4. Paint details, such as the cockpit and weapons. I painted the base an awful brown. I thought it looked good or at least passable at the time.

5. Finish up with a Matte sealer to protect the paint job. This also didn’t work out quite right, some ‘Mechs “frosted,” so they will just look a little funny. I then glued some tufts of grass on the base. Again, I wasn’t too picky, and I used stuff meant for 12mm models instead of 6mm models.

Here is an example of one of my “finished” Battlemechs.

Well, after finishing everyone, I thought the bases were a disaster. So, I’m redoing all of them in these steps:

1. After soaking in water to soften the glue, I peeled the grass off.

2. After letting it dry, I painted the base in white glue, and then dipped the base into some Fine Brown Ballast I bought at the local model railroad store.

3. I then painted the entire base, including the sides, flat black. This seals the ballast to the base.

4. I used this mix of paints on the base, Beasty Brown, then a drybrush of Plague Brown, followed by a light touch of Dead White.

When I make the effort to go down to the Games Workshop Bunker, I’ll get some static grass to put on the base as well. I don’t have the time, energy or money to go there right now.

Sad News Indeed

It is with a heavy heart that I report the closing of Gamerz Depot. It closed over the weekend, after a 3 1/2 year run. We beat the average life expectancy of the small businesses, which if they fail, they fail in the first two years. I put a lot of hard work into the store, and I am truly sad to see it go. It was a “big tent” kind of place, where gamers of every type could come and play. But, due to declining sales, we were forced to close.

It seems destined that Memphis is not a gaming store city. We have had multiple people try their hands at gaming stores, and all of them have closed their doors for one reason or another. The only reason why the GW Battle Bunker stays open is because it is a benefit to those who work there. They don’t care if the store makes money or not, the gaming space will remain open.

New photography setup!

One of the classes I took at Adepticon was on photography. Armed with that knowledge, I went and researched and purchased a light tent. I bought a complete tent in a box, which had the tent itself, a tabletop stand for my camera, and two halogen lights to illuminate the tent. I read a lot of reviews on this particular model, and I am happy with what I bought. Some of the others weren’t, but that was because they left the lights on too long and a few other things.

Anyway, the tent came with four colored backdrops, white, black, red and blue. They all need ironing, and I am getting ready to tackle that project of ironing the wrinkles out of them soon.

The method I used before the light tent was to just put a sheet of clean paper on my work bench, curved up so there was no sharp line behind the model. I then used the ambient light, my work light and the strobe from the camera to light the model. Here is a recent example:

Now, with the light tent, I had to put the camera on a tripod and timer, because without the flash, it took about 3 seconds with an f/16 aperture. Here is the result:

Now, when I turned the lights off, and just used the flash, this was the result:

As you can see, a big difference.

So, when I start documenting my painting, the quality of me taking the pictures will go up. My painting skills, that’s another matter entirely. ;)

Post-Con Update

Well, these two past weekends was a blast!

March 25-27th was MidSouthCon, which I held two Battletech events. I was seriously sweating that no one would show for the events. I was finishing stuff right up to the con, but everything I needed to get done, I got done.

The first event, the Poker Run, I had four people show. We had a bunch of fun, and the winner won with four Threes. I held the Grinder right after, and for that I had eight people show! An immense time was had by all. Each winner received a Gamerz Depot Pro Card, which was cut down to four drinks and one item at the con for 20% off.

I then took the rest of the following week off to get ready for Adepticon, and my son and I drove from Memphis, TN to Chicago on Thursday, 30 March. We attended some 40k Tactics classes that night, and a painting class first thing in the morning. We had all day to peruse the dealer room., where much cash was spent. We then attended a Battletech grinder Friday evening. Right after that, I attended a class on how to photograph miniatures.

Saturday bloomed, and we were up and ready to participate in a “historical” Battletech scenario. How an event in our future is historical is beyond me, but there you go. I commanded a lance of four assault ‘Mechs, and we were attacking a fixed position. I had a couple of other lances on my side, while the defenders had four tanks and four battle armors in fixed redoubts that we had to take out before anything else. We took out the first wave at a medium cost, leaving a fallen ‘Mech on the bluff overlooking the battle. The fallen ‘Mech was able to get up on one arm and lob missiles into the battle. The lance of light ‘Mechs died rather quickly, because they couldn’t stand up to the combined firepower fired at them. Both sides received a reinforcement lance at the same time. Considering what I faced, my lance lasted a pretty long time against a tremendous amount of overwhelming firepower. I probably faced a force of about 25% above the value of my lance. After 8 hours of swinging back and forth, the lance I commanded went down, taking out just about what I was worth. I went down, but went down swinging. The gamemaster running the scenario called it a draw.

Sunday I participated in a Battlefleet Gothic tournament. I played my Ultramarines force of a Battle Barge, 5 strike cruisers and four escorts. I faced an Imperial Navy fleet for the first battle, and I eked out a minor win. I was subsequently stomped by an Eldar force, as well as a Chaos fleet. After the dust settled, I got the “Better luck next year” award for coming in dead last.

Yesterday, we drove back to Memphis, stopping by Chanute AFB on the way. It took us 9 hours of driving to get home.

Today I am resting up and doing my pile of laundry (which just finished washing as I wrote this sentence). So, I am going to finish my chores, go to bed early and go back to work in the morning.

I’ll be writing again soon.

Busy, busy, busy!

Just a couple of days left to MidSouthCon. I had to repaint a couple of mechs because they “frosted,” and something went wrong in the Army Builder quality control, because my mechs painted out of the first can are NOT the same color as the second can! I may have to basecoat them in black and see if that works.

I am taking Tuesday off to paint and repaint the mechs. I am almost done, so close I can almost taste it. 12 to paint, dip and matte, another dozen or so to matte. If I start early, I can probably have everybody dipped my evening time, then they can dry Wednesday, and I can matte them then. Last touches Thursday, and Friday is load and setup day for Gamerz Depot at the con.

My poker run starts at 9:00am Saturday, and the grinder starts at 2:00pm, right after the poker run.

I also have to find time to finish my Battlefleet Gothic fleet so I can take them to Adepticon and kick some butt! I am so looking forward to playing with my list against some of the best of the country.

Dinner is coming up in a couple of minutes, then it’s off to bed early and early to rise!

Setback!

Well, I went yesterday to start sealing my mechs. It turns out there was too much humidity in the air, and the matt varnish “frosted” on the 7 mechs I sprayed. So now, I have to strip, repaint and redip them all over again. This will set me back by a week, minimum. I should have done just one, but I was stupid and thought I could get away with varnishing them all on the same day, so I got in a hurry. I promise I won’t do that again.

74 Days to Adepticon!

Well, I received some bad news recently.

I found out that I don’t need to bring my Battalion of Mercenary Battlemechs. I was going to show up on the field, then fight for whomever paid me the most. ;)

I found out everything needed is there, including pencils and dice if necessary. This is also true of the Grinder, but I might try to sneak my ‘Mechs into the mix anyway.

So, my painting has slowed. I am still making progress painting, and I am about 40% complete. I will be taking pictures soon, not only for this blog, but for some Battletech message boards as well.

I also need to get some more Thunderhawk transports for BFG, I’m 9 short at the moment. I may have to rob some from the other stands that I already have Thawks for, and have only two instead of three per stand.

Other than that, everything including fund raising is on track and on time.

Oops. Forgot a step.

Well, I screwed up. Not badly, but I still forgot a step. So, let’s try it again.

Here’s my Crusader, which like I said in a previous post, needed to undergo another dunk in Simple Green. Careful! These files are big. I like the detail. Click on them for full size.

Spray painted AP Dragon Red:

Detail painted:

Now comes the missing step: Dipping. This is where I dip the model into a “Quick Shade” that I just dip and then shake off the excess. I then let it dry for at least 12 hours. This really brings the models details out.

I don’t consider missing the AP Matt Varnish as a missing step here, because the dip also seals the model. Besides, I couldn’t do it, the weather wasn’t right for me to go out and spray paint it.

So ends the work on this model. What do you think? When the weather warms up, I might pluck the grass off and AP Matt Varnish it just to really seal it, and maybe bring that shine off the model.

Hey, it works!

This Army Painter stuff works! Okay, here’s the story.

Here is the first picture I took of my Highlander, as part of the four ‘Mechs from the prior post. As with all pictures, click on them for a full size.

Now comes the base coat. This came from a spray can, and is both primer and color. Luckily, this is the exact shade I wanted. I bought three pots of GW Red Gore, and this AP Dragon Red matches perfectly:

Now, one hours worth of work. I painted the base GW Dark Flesh, it was the darkest shade I had. I was hoping for a couple of shades darker, but this will do just fine. I painted a couple of areas with GW Mithril Silver, then painted the cockpit in GW Regal Blue, followed by a highlight of GW Ice Blue:

Finished product. I sprayed a coat of Matt varnish on, then glued some 6mm Highland Tufts on:

Now, this would have normally taken 6+ hours for me to do this one ‘Mech by hand, and I did it in less than two hours. 14 ‘Mechs left to strip, 36 to paint and one completed, with 90 days left to go. I think I can get this job done after all. The crucial point is me getting warm, calm days to paint outside. I’m burning daylight, I better get some more painted!

Going to Adepticon!

Divisional Command has given permission for our son and I to travel to Adepticon this year. I have already signed up for tactics classes, how to paint and photograph models, and a Battlefleet Gothic tournament. Just to get a badge is $35, then each class or tournament costs more, so my $35 badge cost me $101. My son’s wasn’t that much cheaper, his cost $89. Then you have gas, food, hotel, and spending money, this is going to cost a pretty penny.

This will mean I have to bust my balls to make extra money to pay for the trip. It also means that I have to get ready an entire Battalion of ‘Mechs including a Command Lance, which means 40 Battlemechs must be cleaned, assembled if need be, based and painted. Plus I must have a record sheet for each one. That’s just one of 962 items on my list to get done between now and the end of March.

Just to let you nee what I’m working with, here is a picture of one of my ‘Mechs. He got dunked in Simple Green for a couple of days, then scrubbed with a toothbrush. There is still a lot of paint left in the nooks and crannys that I couldn’t get with the first cleaning, so it looks like he will have to take another bath. Be careful, this is a large image, and you can see a lot of detail. Click on it for the full size picture.

Here is a lance of ‘Mechs that I picked at random. They are, a Crusader, Vulture, Longbow and Highlander. Again, a high quality image is yours upon clicking the image.

I have been vacillating on how I should paint these ‘Mechs. I was going to basecoat them with a white primer, then hand paint them in a GW Red Gore. I then realized that would take a lot of time, perhaps too much. So, I will see if the Army Painter system has a color that I am looking for. If not, I am stuck with painting them all by hand.

The Army Painter system has a spray can that is both primer and top coat. You prime/paint them, paint highlights and other details by hand, dip them into a “quick shade” highlighting liquid, shake it off and then spray dullcoat on them to seal and protect the paint job. It is a system that is meant for mass production of miniatures that still gives a high quality paint job.

Back to the original subject at hand. If you would like to donate to “Marks Adepticon Fund” Please send it to “paypal” -@- this domain. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You!

Update

Like I said in my previous post, a lot of things have happened over the past month.

1. I have quit working at the store. I have invested the past 30 months of my life into Gamerz Depot. I have been the only one there, while others came and went as they pleased. It was my blood, sweat and tears that kept the store open. Last month, my family said, “It’s either us, or the store.” That kind of choice is no choice at all. I had to choose my family. I still occasionally show up to play games, but it’s on my schedule, not theirs.

2. I now spend time with my son. I now spend two nights a week, going to an exercise class with my son. He really appreciates the time we spend together, and so do I. We are also going to try a Saturday morning class as well.

3. I am advancing in Masonry. This month, I was installed as an officer “in-line” for my lodge. This means, if things go to plan, I will be the Master of the lodge in 2015. I also “conferred” a degree Tuesday night, which means that I ran the degree work for one person for their first degree. I have to learn how to confer two more degrees, plus how to open and close the lodge for all three degrees in the next 8 months or so in order to be able to advance in the line. I’m pretty sure I can do it.

4. I plan on going to AdeptiCon. The first weekend of April of next year is a very large 40k themed convention in Chicago. I want to go because there is a couple of big Battletech games there, as well as a Battlefleet Gothic tournament. The sticking point is that it’s the weekend after MidSouthCon, and I don’t know if Battalion Command (i.e. The Wife) will let me go. If I bust my buns with extra work, and save every penny I can, my son and I just might be able to do it.

That’s all I can think of this early in the morning. If I can think of any more, I’ll be sure to put them in a later post. In the mean time, I have to get to work!

Battletech Poker Run

On Saturday October 30th, Gamerz Depot is having a Classic Battletech Poker Run. Just what the heck is a CBT Poker Run? I’ll tell you.

The full rules are posted on the calendar through the link above, but basically you are going to run around the board, collecting playing cards, trying to get the best poker hand. There will be other players trying to do the same thing, so you will be shooting them, and they you, while trying to collect these cards. There will also be automated turrets that activate randomly and shoot the closest player.

You can collect cards from a player you kill, cause a 20+ points of damage to in a round, do a Death From Above and so on. The overall object of the game is to make it off the board with the best possible poker hand.

The hitch to the game is, the smaller your ‘Mech, the better your gunnery and piloting skill rolls. For example, if you decide to run a Locust, you will have a base to hit on 2D6 of zero, and a piloting skill of zero as well. If you decide to run an assault ‘Mech like a Stone Rhino, you will have a skill of 7 and 7. That’s real bad. Rookies don’t have that bad stats. So, the “crunchier” your ‘Mech, the better your stats. If you play a light, fast ‘Mech, one or two hits could put you down. But if they person who is shooting you is in an assault ‘Mech, he likely won’t hit you in the first place. If you play it safe and take an assault ‘Mech, you won’t move very fast, and it will be very hard to hit, but you will have the armor to take a lot of punishment.

If you are a CBT player, or even if you’re not come and play! We will have spare mechs available for people to play.

Showing off the new store

Here you go folks, pictures like I promised. I’m sorry they are a bit late, but it looks more like a game store. We had to wait until Monday to get the shelving for all of the board games, and I underestimated how much we needed. So, when we get the spare cash, more slat board and shelving.

Here are the pictures. As always, click on the picture for the full size picture.

So, that’s what the store looks like. It’s a couple hundred square feet smaller, but it’s all usable space, we don’t have the bathrooms sticking out in the middle, forcing us to not use a lot of space when it came to big tournaments.

I hope you approve, and I hope you come by and check us out!

OPEN FOR BUSINESS!!!

The time has come, Gamerz Depot will be open come 5pm TODAY! I’m taking the day off to spend with family, so the mantle of the last finishing work goes to others. Which is good, because I was worn out and in pain last night. I hung the electric open sign, the notification board, and more like 70 feet of slat board, rather than the 100 feet I thought it would be. In no air conditioning. We didn’t get power until late afternoon. So, doing all of the stuff that I did, especially what I did by myself, had me drenched in sweat the whole day until the power came on.

The new store shelving (hopefully) comes today, and from now on our product will be put up on shelves, rather than on the floor.

I would like to thank all of the gamers who showed up yesterday and lent their backs and hands to help out. Without them, we couldn’t have made it to this point by last night.

Pictures will come Sunday, so look out for those.
