ICANN can do the job
ICANN, Internet Company Assigning Names and Numbers, is the people who basically control the Internet. They hand out IP addresses for web pages and stuff like that.
Well, other countries want in on the act. And like China, they want to censor the Net. Remember, no country other than the US recognizes the right of free speech as something the government cannot take away from the people. While other countries may have "freedom of speech," they usually have caveats to that, such as when you come up against the interests of the government, then you can be silenced. That crap is even in the UN charter. I have talked about it before.
If the control of the Internet passes to the UN, or anything sponsored by the UN, then free speech will be in trouble.
"One mistaken notion is that the United Nations wants to 'take over,' police or otherwise control the Internet," [Kofi] Annan wrote in an editorial in The Washington Post this week. "Nothing could be farther from the truth. The United Nations wants only to ensure the Internet's global reach, and that effort is at the heart of this summit."
After how Kofi got tangled up in the Oil for Food scandal, I think we should trust him, don't you? I just know down deep in the cockles of my heart he has my best interests first and foremost in his list of priorities. [/sarcasm]
